Colorado Weed Laws for Tourists
How old do I have to be to purchase, possess or consume retail marijuana?
You must be 21 and older to buy, possess or use retail (recreational) marijuana.
How much marijuana can I legally purchase or possess as a a non-resident of Colorado?
Non-residents of Colorado are restricted to purchasing no more than ¼ ounce (7 grams) in a single transaction. Since both residents and non-residents of Colorado who are over the age of 21 are allowed to possess up to an ounce of marijuana, you could technically visit four dispensaries in one day and purchase a quarter ounce at each one.
Can I consume marijuana in public?
No, it is illegal to consume marijuana in public. This includes but is not limited to areas accessible to the public such as transportation facilities, schools, amusement/sporting/music venues, parks, playgrounds, sidewalks and roads and outdoor and rooftop cafes. It is also illegal to smoke at indoor-but-public locations like bars, restaurants and common areas in buildings.
Where can I consume marijuana?
Generally speaking, discretion is appreciated and usually required. Hopefully, you have already done your research and found marijuana friendly lodging. If not, consider visiting one of Colorado’s Marijuana Social Lounges where you can freely smoke and consume marijuana onsite. Not your thing? You just need to get creative and use some discretion. Most Colorado “weed enthusiasts” are pretty considerate in terms of keeping it low key. Avoid smoking near other people and you probably won’t attract attention. For many people in Denver, an alley will work for a quick session, but know that the Denver Police have begun to issue more citations lately for public consumption.
Can I take marijuana through airport security or travel out of state with it?
No. It is illegal to take marijuana across state lines. DIA prohibits possession, use, display, and transfer of all marijuana on its property.
